7:51 am
far away from the library of congress -- >> one of the perks of living in d.c., right? >> absolutely. and i was able to research much of my material from the black newspapers, because the library of congress has an enormous collection of older black newspapers. it was from there that i got so much of my material. >> which was essential, because mainstream media didn't cover the story . >> absolutely. and didn't cover the story of black people period. and for golf it was less of a story. but the black newspapers could cover many of the tournaments, many of the social events, and it was an opportunity to go back and review that material that was in the library of congress' archives. >> thank you for your passion and persistence to get this story written. >> thank you. >> your story includes both struggles and triumphs. kind of talk to me a little bit
7:52 am
about both of those. >> the struggles are numerous. i would like to talk more about the accomplishments, because in the face of all of the difficulties that blacks faced at the time in golf, there were remarkable people who came through that period. for instance, there was ann gregory, a black woman golfer out of ohio, who triumphed under great difficulties. formation of the wake robin golf club, again by women, who were rejected by their spouse, who had their own golf clubs and didn't want them to join, even as an auxillary. so they formed their own golf club, with the help of some of the men in the golf club that didn't want them. and they petitioned with the help of their spouses, the

7:54 am
and began having tournaments. the first tournament was in 1926 in massachusetts. again, blacks from the washington, d.c. area played a very monumental role. the lincoln memorial golf club was established in 1924. and that was a 9-hole course played on sand and greens. it was awful. it was terrible. it led eventually to the formation of langston golf course with the youth and the talents that was brought up by the women and the men and the royal golf club. >> i wish we had more time, because it's so wonderful to hear your stories and learn the history. before we go, i want to ask you what is your hope for the future for blacks in golf? >> i think it will depend upon
